Written by Vladimira
Friday, 03 November 2006

For those, who might be interested in the run up to the Big Feast: Delwen Samuel (the Cambridge scholar who helped Scottish and Newcastle to brew the Ancient Egyptian Beer ) will be lecturing to the Friends of the Petrie Museum on 'Baking and Brewing in New Kingdom Egypt'.

When: Friday 17 November at 18.30.
Where: G22 lecture theatre, Pearson Building UCL Gower St.

As it is not the usual venue, you might benefit of the directions below.

Please note that the lecture takes place in a new venue - lecture theatre G22 in the Pearson Building which is just to the left inside the main gates of UCL on Gower St. As you enter the gates and pass the security lodge ignore the main entrance immediately on your left (swipe card required to enter) and continue around the building to your left - the entry way is at the far end in the corner. Enter this doorway, turn right and G22 is on your right.

For Delwen Samuel's list of articles please see Lecture 5 on Food.

Some crosswords for fun PDF Print E-mail
Written by Vladimira
Monday, 23 October 2006

Some people have confessed they are not very keen on crosswords. I have to say, they can be a lot of fun, once you get the hang of it – and if you have a solution you can check against. Especially, if the crossword deals with a subject you love – like Ancient Egypt.

Since we are to do a crossword for one of our assignments, I have put together several links for Egyptian themed crosswords – from the easiest to the most difficult. So, if you feel like it, you can try your luck and get used to them before the 23 November.

Please note that the crossword is not compulsory, you can still do the second essay instead or - as we learned at the last class - a poster (on DeM related issue, which should be informative, grabbing and visually attractive). These options are open to anyone who doesn't want to do a crossword or gets a low mark. Rosalind said she was going to design a new crossword based on what we learn until the 16 November (inclusive).

Deir el-Medina from the donkey path on a beautiful day
As you could have seen in the Lecture 3, it is adorned by a couple of beautiful pictures. That is thanks to my friend Lenka Peacock, who has generously let me use her photos on our website.

Lenka completed the Deir el-Medina course last year, but has studied Egyptology for quite a while. She often travels and if you like, you can see some of her best photographs here (click on Tags to get specific Egyptology pics)

Re: Museum visits PDF Print E-mail

As you know, the last class visit will be to the Turin museum, which has a wonderful collection of Deir el-Medina artefacts. The visit is planned for a long weekend 16-18  March 2007 (Friday to Sunday).

Most of us will be gathering in Torino sometime on Friday, some might join on Saturday. The museum visit will be on Saturday. While we are staying in the same hotel (LE PETIT HOTEL), everybody will make their way to Italy by themselves.

Please, also note that the Chiddingtone visit was cancelled and we haven't agreed the alternative plan yet. Both BM and Cambridge will go ahead as planned. We might do the visit to the "Great Deir el-Medina Library" at Jack's and Rosalind's though - sometime in November.

More details on Turin, if you click on the link below.
